Creating Business Agility
• Eleven percent of U.S. consumers use their smartphones to
make an online purchase at least once a month, compared to
just 5 percent of Canadian respondents.

While some companies are asking, “Why do I need mobile tech-
nology?,” progressive companies ask, “How can we do things dif-
ferently with mobile technology so that we improve productivity and
reduce costs?” And that is exactly what has happened with the
proliferation of mobile technology in the enterprise. There are tre-
mendous cost benefits in being able to disseminate searchable
information easily via the web and mobile to customers, partners,
and employees rather than having call centers or expensive printed
brochures for the same objective.
The adoption of mobile technology at work is as dramatic as the
introduction into the enterprise of the Internet in the mid-1990s. When
the Internet came into the workplace, it was thought to be a fad.
However, that proved to be wrong, as there is a huge cost benefit and
competitive advantage associated with delivering information in an
efficient and timely manner.
Mobile technology in the workplace may be even more profound
than what the Internet first caused. For 200 years we put on the monkey
suit, fought traffic, and came to a building to go to work. What was
special about that building was that it contained all the data and that
was where the people were. Employees no longer need to come to the
office to get access to the information and connect with people, as
most tasks can be accomplished with e-mail, videoconferencing,
phone, collaboration tools, and so on. The definition of work stands
to be redefined forever as mobile technologies are adopted within the
workplace.
We’ve seen some large corporations be very effective in using
remote workers. In many cases people don’t even know where
